The American cancer society announced changes to its influential guidelines for breast cancer screening. The society advises reducing the frequency from every year to every other year and recommends ending physical breast examination.by doctors entirely.
Two eminent breast radiologists and a breast surgeon who were named ‘Mothers of the year ‘ by the American cancer society ,in recognition of their roles as mothers and physicians and who have devoted their lives to the fight against breast cancer, profoundly disagrees with the changes.
According to them, to detect breast cancer as early as possible, continue annual screening mammogram starting at age 40!!They agree, mammograms are not perfect. There are no ideal tests for detecting cancer but early detection has very important benefits.
Delaying and increasing the intervals between screening will result in delayed diagnosis and larger tumour sizes, leading to more extensive and potentially expensive treatments.
