Previous studies had shown that ingested excess calcium ,particularly in older people accumulates in the body’s soft tissues and does not make it to the bones or get excreted in the urine.
It was also known that as a person ages calcium based plaque builds up in the blood vessels like the Aorta, other arteries impeding blood flow and increase the risk of heart attack.
Researchers at the prestigious John Hopkins university school of medicine analysed 10years of tests done on more than 2700 people before publishing the concerns about the potential hams of supplements.
Taking calcium in the form of supplements may raise the risk of plaque build up in the arteries and damage the heart although a diet high in calcium- rich foods appear to be protective.
