Catching diabetes early or taking steps to postpone or prevent the disease equals to protecting your eyes too.

Diabetic eye disease is a group of eye conditions that can affect people with diabetes and all forms of diabetic eye disease have the potential to cause severe vision loss and blindness.

Diabetic Retinopathy which is specific to diabetes may present itself with the symptoms-

*Blurry or double vision

*Rings, flashing lights or blank spots.

*Dark or floating spots.

*Pain or pressure in one or both eyes.

*Trouble seeing things out of the corners of your eyes.

*A person is at a greater risk of developing Retinopathy  if

a) has Diabetes for a long time

b) has persistently high blood sugar levels

c) has high blood pressure

d) has high cholesterol

e) is pregnant

f) is of Asian or Afro-Caribbean background

2) Diabetic macular edema (DME)

A consequence of Diabetic Retinopathy, DME is swelling in the macular area of retina.  The longer a person has Diabetes, the more likely the person gets Diabetic Retinopathy. Get regular check ups.
