Scientists have developed a new therapeutic approach that could save diabetic patients from amputation by promoting wound healing.
Diabetic patients frequently have lesions on their feet that are very difficult to heal.,mainly due to poor circulation of blood,When the cases are serious and non-healing , a decision is made to amputate. With the newly developed treatment by the university of Montreal hospital research center, of modifying specific white blood cells to close wounds and promote healing of diabetic ulcers., amputations could be avoided. The specific white blood cells, the’ macrophages’ are modified to make them capable of accelerating cutaneous healing It was already known that macrophages play a key role in the normal wound healing process. They accelerate healing while maintaining a balance between inflammatory and anti-inflammatory reactions and specialise in major cellular clean up process and tissue repair.!
